This is a famous site containing remains of a region dating a little over 2000 years. Several interesting objects including impressive tombs, stone houses, large storage jars, and glassware from Egypt and Syria have been unearthed here. Across the creek from Umm Al Qaywayn stands this lovely haven for birds. The bird sanctuary is also noted for its mangrove swamps, representing an extremely delicate and a fast-dwindling ecosystem. The place of birth of the ruling families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, this oasis is one of the largest in the region and is the gateway to Rub Al Khali (the Empty Quarter). Also known as the White Fort, this palace dates back to the late 1700’s and is the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi. |
